from biochemist to software developer

class="wp-image-1180

Changing careers always requires a lot of courage, and Satu Hyvärinen has it. Satu, who has worked as a biochemist for more than ten years, became interested in programming and ended up starting a new career as a software developer at Miili. The courage really paid off, because Satu is living her dream today!

Career as a biochemist

Satu Hyvärinen's journey to become a software developer has not been the most traditional, but even more colourful and interesting. Satu originally studied to become a Master of Science in Chemical Equipment Engineering. He then switched to biochemistry/immunology and for ten years went on a career working in the laboratory. During this time, Satu also defended her doctorate.

About three years ago, Satu left the university and moved on to work for Orion Diagnostica as a product developer for diagnostic tests. A burning spark for coding was ignited when Satu started coding little apps on her Apple phone in her spare time. When coding these, Satu noticed that she wanted to learn more about the topic and started taking MOOC courses at the University of Helsinki. Hunger grew when she ate, which is why Satu took as many courses as she could from her work.

Dreams come true

In 2019, the company in which Satu worked started to reduce product development. However, so many studies in software development had accumulated alongside the work that the CO-operation negotiations provided a good opportunity to pursue a new career in software development. Satu applied to Saranen's recruiting training programme, which aims to retrain employees. Satu was selected from several applicants for the programme and a collaborative company was sought for her, where she would be able to dive into software development.

Ilkka Horsma, founder of Miili Consulting, became interested, contacted and offered Satu a job as a software developer. Ilkka and Satu slammed hands together, and nowadays Satu lives her dream every day on Miili. Interesting projects and opportunities to learn have been available since the first working day.

" The projects have been interesting and it is actually impossible to get bored here. You can also do things in your own way in peace without anyone breathing down your neck. Miili's team has also been great!"

Miili Consulting was born out of Ilkka Horsma's desire to create a workplace for IT talent, where employee well-being and development are at the core. The advantage of a small consultancy house is a flexible working environment in which each employee can be taken into account as an individual and meet his or her needs.

At Miili, team diversity is also important. We are interested to hear more about you, whether you are an experienced software development veteran, a superstar of the future, a person who has just landed in Finland or a career changer without any new challenges. Feel free to leave your contact information and we will contact you and tell you more about our projects!
